You literally don’t have to use that iron thing they put behind the drywall, you can use anything, a piece of a prism, whatever. You just attach it from the back the same way, screw it in, and then smooth it out

you don't need those brackets you can use scrap wood or do a california patch

You can do exactly the same with a piece of drywall or a piece of wood almost for free… 🤷🏼‍♂️
