That is not how it supposed to be done. This kind of connection reduces internal diameter of the pipe. There should be special connection fitting.

Or you could get a splice connector for like 45cents and just use that

Wrong, you've added a restriction. The overlapping part should be on outside instead of I inside. Physics!!!
