how to paint rocks in 30 seconds
10 Comments

hey i always wanted to ask, is there a logic behind the color variation when you're blocking out the base colors? that adds such a higher degree of realism, but i feel like im doing smth wrong if i just imitate that at random

Definitely some logic and also a lot of intuition. The more you look at colors, the more variation you begin to see. When you start, you just see green. As you progress, you begin to see tooooons of different greens (and different colors within the greens)

The moss between the rocks looks so soft, it fascinates me

This is so beautiful, I feel very inspired to try and do rocks - but every time I try they look like little grey and brown poopers lmao

Aim for more straight lines and clearly defined forms. Ignore surface details, subtle color shifts, all that sorta stuff for a while. Just get nice, big, chunky forms. Think about nice boxes. All of the other stuff comes later.

Wow, I would never draw that in 30 s ;)

Hey Noah, it'd be awesome if I could interview about your awesome environment paintings! Especially your traditional ones! It would be for my ATMO site that's everything environment art. You can check out my other interviews here with top artists Thanks!

Yeah man! Been out of town this weekend so didn't have a chance to respond to your email—but I'll shoot you a response soon and we'll figure out a time. Thanks!
