I'm embarrassed to ask but what's the difference between a mortar and pestle and a molcajete?

A molcajete is just one type of one! Volcanic stone on volcanic stone. If the mortar is stone, it's good for hard things like spices. If the pestle is stone, it doesn't let you pound it, but it is optimal for grinding motions. Wooden pestles are for pounding
