I have witnessed this in a shop at Tehran: When real saffron is rubbed between two moist fingers, you can clearly see the difference. Real saffron leaves a vibrant yellow stain, and the threads remain intact. Fake saffron leaves a red stain and tends to disintegrate.

Another check to identify is the thickness of the strand. Real saffron is thick from one end and thin on the other. Fake saffron thickness remains same in the whole strand.

So I'm using the real saffron (Everest)for my biriyani prepn After adding saffron to milk+ kewda water soln,the milk turns yellow which I use for rice colouring n flavour .Problem is the pack costs around 250 rs. N can be used 3- 4 times ormore bt expensive for testing
