That's true actually, Methane (CH₄) is lighter than air and highly explosive. Victorian engineers didn’t yet fully understand the importance of ventilation of plumbing systems. Today, plumbing systems use vent stacks to safely vent sewer gases outside but Victorians often omitted these, creating time bombs beneath their homes.🙃 🚨 Thomas Crapper popularized the S-bend trap, which uses water as a liquid seal to block sewer gases.
