How was Lando Norris' penalty actually decided? 🤔

The main takeaway seems to be that the rules currently allow for a defending driver to abandon hope of making the corner, to ensure they’re ahead at the apex. And that needs to change.

The problem with all of this is, that the only reason Lando was off the track in the first place was because he was avoiding an out of control Max who couldn't stay on the track.

Yes @tedkravitz it is quite simple. The bit that has been overlooked is that (as ICA ruled in Jan '24) rules & guidelines must be fully applied. So the bit about the inside car being required to stay on track also has to be considered, not just who was ahead at the apex. When the inside car goes off track it is not a valid overtake / defence. The FIA have the ICA for a reason, they need to use their powers under J&D art 9.1.1 to refer these controversial stewards decisions to ICA for an authoritive ruling by trusted & qualified judges, not just rely on laypeople stewards #NoMoreBS

Yes, but we need to add the root cause: MV pushed Lando off track, which is not allowed. That is his MO and wasn't (again) taken in consideration to apply a penalty to both cars. btw: I don't like the sound of "He was further off the track". This should be binary: Are you on or off the track. In this case, BOTH cars were off track. Let's not give Horner more ideas on interpretation. #F1xed

Everyone seems to be missing the point that Lando was fully past Max on DRS on the straight right before the corner . So in my opinion Lando was ahead, then Max braked too late and re passed Lando by going off the track himself. Do Max was the one that gained the advantage.

I agree with pen for Norris but Verstappen should have got the same 5 sec pen for forcing him off the track…just like Russell did. I think that is frustrating thing for everyone watching, that and Verstappen overtook a Ferrari earlier in the race off the track with no pen.

He was only ahead because he braked late & didn't turn into the corner, forcing Norris off the track. He gets away with his aggressive nature 99% of the time because the other driver gives in to avoid an accident. He lacks any race craft & this season has shown his major flaws

I get the rules, but this one was another incident where Verstappen drives straight on when the other driver is on the outside. He's done that many times, mostly against Lewis. Going straight on prevents the other car from turning in. This is a deliberate act 🤔😤🏁

If this had been the other way around and Max got a penalty for overtaking off the track on the outside, Sky Sports would have barely mentioned it.
