Thanks @Meta for asking me to make this PSA to get everyone's friends and family ready to catch romance scammers this Valentine's Day across the internet. This is serious bc romance scammers are GOOD at scamming -- they rake in billions a year this way.

How many times have you gotten a weird "wrong number" text that somehow turns flirty?! The scammers one goal is your money. They either get it by building trust then asking for money to get out of a "dire situation". Or they build trust and then invite you to make money with them in a bogus investment opportunity -- stealing it all.

I had a project this year tracking scammers using deepfakes in live romance scam video calls. They are able to essentially wear a face like a mask (using only 1 picture found online, demo'd by me below) to convince their target they are an IG model or celeb in need of money.

And for a lot of victims, this live deepfake video call sealed the deal in sending that money. A voice clone phone call is useful for a romance scammer but the live video deepfake works even better -- many people don't realize *live* video call deepfakes are this easy to make already, so they deeply believe what they see (I'm able to make the below live video call deepfake with only one profile picture found online) which works super well in Zoom/Teams, etc.

Romance scams are scary and many people feel shame when it happens to them so they don't speak out about it, making it even more common. I've had multiple "that happened to me" or "my aunt" DMs across platforms in the last few minutes just from posting this thread alone. I'm so sorry if you've dealt with this type of scam, and remember -- you are sadly not alone in this, it happens often 💔

Let's get actionable, how can we catch romance scammers? 1. Be politely paranoid - scammers create fake profiles that appear real on the surface, but are fake or stolen identities. Look them up, does their name or picture appear frequently online across many different accounts? You can help your family reverse image search the profile picture to show them they are indeed a scammer.

Actionable steps to catch romance scammers continued: 2. Be suspicious of any request for money, passwords, sensitive personal data, etc If someone is asking for money or support for a terrible situation soon after meeting you online, it's sadly likely a scam. Stick to supporting those you know well. If they ask about your financial situation, they are trying to lure you into an investment romance scam -- block them and report (if possible).

Another action step to catch a romance scammer: 3. Remind your family and friends to talk to a trusted person like yourself before taking sensitive actions (such as sending thousands to someone they met online for their terrible situation). Let them know you are good at spotting scammers and can help them before they lose money. Before sending money, data, or choosing to invest in the latest investment opportunity, get that 2nd opinion from a trusted person in your life <3
