This temple was built by Chola emperor Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010 CE, the temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some interesting facts - It is built in stunning natural colour of granite without the use of cement or binding agent. The architecture is so perfectly balanced that it’s dome casts no shadow at noon. The Vimana made up of an 80-ton granite block is one of the tallest in South India . The main temple houses one of the largest Shivalingas in India made of a single 20-ton granite block. There are a total of 108 additional Shivlingas inside the temple complex.
