The shift towards closed, commercial AI is a setback for innovation but it is bound to happen in a capitalist economy.

totally get where he's coming from though. feels like the ai world's gone from open-source playground to corporate boardroom real quick.

Is it really that bad? Doesn’t it just mean that companies will pick the best people to work on AI? If it was all open source it would probably be mostly hippies

We have been down this road before. Being closed, will be catastrophic (think Theranos). Wright Brothers and Ford motor company's incorporation both were 1903. Aviation's open and transparent approach to safety/aircrash investigations (AAIB/FAA hat-tip) Record speak for itself.🫡

Clément's concerns about AI's commercial shift are valid. The rapid commercialization risks stifling the collaborative spirit essential for true innovation. We must ensure that openness and scientific integrity remain at the forefront of AI development.
