It's a quite common thing to do! The TGV Réseau are compatible with all the TGV Duplex! (But the TGV Atlantique you could see in West of France only work together)

Très fréquent,et ça marche bien. Par contre les nouveaux TGV M ne seront pas compatibles avec les anciens TGV.

It does work. I don’t know how it works, but it does. Also in India in some stretches due to gradient they attach bankers loco at the end of train. The banker can be different than the main loco. I don’t know how they match the acceleration.
