I'm old enough to remember when SpaceX was in the "then they laugh at you" phase of their rocket development. Two most important factors to success are competition and willingness to fail, we're seeing both here. Whichever robot that wins the race in China is going to be something special.

I think they use foam pads for reuse purposes, which is no different from the reverse thrust used when rockets land.
