George Everest was the Surveyor General of India so it was his job to map the Indian subcontinent. But he was just the admin guy right? It was actually an Indian mathematician - Radhanath Sikdar who actually for the first time calculated the height and discovered that “Peak XV” was the tallest. So the British did what they do best - they measure it, they own it - they’ll name it. Peak XV was now Mount Everest!

Almost :) It was a pleasant surprise for me when expert Nepalese climber Mingma David Sherpa chose to carry and read through my book ‘Doglapan’ on his recent ascent to mighty Mt. Everest. Sandy Hill-Pittman is a Journalist/Socialite who climbed Everest for a book deal and was one of 2 journalist on the ill-fated 1996 ascent of Everest that killed 8 people. What isn't known by most people is the decision to allow her on the mountain and the actions taken to get her to the peak was one of the main reasons 8 people died. I'm going to do a little thread on the climb and her.

🚨🗻Islam Makhachev says climbing Mount Everest is something he believes he could do one day. After speaking with two Dagestanis who successfully reached the summit, he described them as walking legends and acknowledged the immense difficulty of the challenge, saying every minute on the mountain is a trial. However, it's not the climb itself that gives him pause. Makhachev says he often wonders how people manage to pray and perform namaz in such extreme conditions and freezing temperatures. According to him, that's the one thing that holds him back from attempting Everest. (via Adam Zubayraev )
