Hundreds of thousands of people have rallied again today in Istanbul to show their support for the city's imprisoned mayor Ekrem Imamoglu - widely seen as President Erdogan's key rival. The demonstration was organized by Imamoglu's party, the main opposition CHP.

Imamoglu was detained on March 19th and later jailed pending trial over corruption charges. His arrest has triggered the biggest anti-government demonstrations in Turkey in over a decade. Hundreds have been detained so far. At today's rally, police kept their distance.

The Turkish government insists that the courts operate impartially and independently. President Erdogan has slammed the mass protests as a "movement of violence" and accused the opposition CHP of "provoking" people. Imamoglu's arrest has drawn criticism from European capitals.
