On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made its second U.S. landfall near Buras, Louisiana, as a powerful Category 3 hurricane. The storm’s catastrophic surge and flooding overwhelmed the New Orleans-area flood-protection system, causing numerous levee and floodwall failures and inundating roughly 80% of New Orleans. Katrina ultimately claimed 1,392 lives, making it one of the deadliest and most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history

With sustained winds of 175 MPH and a night-shattering pressure of 900 MBAR, she became the 2ND most powerful Hurricane in American History. Her surge of 24.6 FEET, which ruthlessly flattened every trace of manmade infrastructure along the Mississippi coastline, has to this day only been surpassed by Hurricane Katrina (2005) for a landfalling storm in the United States.
