I lived through a category 5 Hurricane known as Ivan on Saturday, September 11, 2004 in the dormitory of St Matthews medical school at the Cayman Islands. Some of the student body had taken the school up on a $500 offer on Friday to evacuate to Miami for the weekend, which was just an hour away by commercial flight. The school package included airfare and hotel and students were bunking 2 to a room. Some students opted not to do that. I was among them. However, among that subset, they all went to storm shelters on Friday night. I did not. In the morning, the first floor was flooded with about 3 feet of water so I went to the second floor and found a security guard there. We just hung out in a room for a day or so while the storm battered the island. It suffered a lot of damage and many people died.
