Hurricane Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba Wednesday as a Category 3 storm after pummeling Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. It struck Jamaica on Tuesday with top sustained winds of 185 mph (295 kph).

A bridge in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica was swallowed by a swollen river on Tuesday as the eye of Hurricane Melissa closed in on the western coast of the country. According to See Jamaica, the channel that live streamed this footage, the bridge is a "vital link between Spanish Town and Linstead." Hurricane Melissa has since made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm. It is the most powerful hurricane to lash the island since record-keeping began 174 years ago and one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded.
