I don’t agree with the entire concept, but I do agree with the idea of establishing a clear point in time where we move forward with new rules. Take this example: a man migrates here illegally from Iraq, meets a woman who’s also here illegally from Mexico, and they have a child together in the U.S. That child grows up speaking only English, knowing no other country, no other culture — only America. Now let’s say that child is 11 years old, and both parents get deported. What happens to the kid? He doesn’t speak Spanish or Arabic. He’s never known life outside the U.S. — this is the only home he’s ever had. Is it right to deport him too? And where exactly would he even go — Iraq? Mexico? He’s not connected to either of those countries. According to the logic of some, he’d be punished for something completely out of his control. That’s where the current approach is fundamentally flawed. However, if we draw a line and say that from this point forward, the rules will be different — for example, birthright citizenship ends as of a certain date — then at least we’re not applying new laws retroactively to innocent children who were raised here and have no other home. That’s how you fix the system without punishing kids for the decisions their parents made.
