I remember when I came to England two decades ago and was driving in a car with my housemate. I saw people raising a hand to him, especially in cars, and I asked him how he knew so many people. 😅🤣 we still laugh about it 🤣

Sadly it's being lost as manners isn't being taught and the quote unquote new Britains have little to no manner at all. Rude people send my blood boiling.

When I was 9, my sister & I was crossing the road with my step-grandad. We had ALWAYS thanked a driver if they give way to us, this one occasion, I forgot & he slapped me round the back of the head that I almost fell over... I'm almost 40 & never EVER forget to thank a driver 😂

This IS a British thing. This, queuing, flashing to let drivers through, holding the door open. WE are the polite, civilised nation. THIS is British culture.

My middle school were known for encouraging us kids to do this. We used to get letters read out in assembly praising our good manners on the crossing outside of the school. You can still tell Bishop Lovett school kids today, as they will always put their hand up to say thank you!

WE do this.. I instilled this into my children. They do the same thing. Maybe it is a English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish thing.. We also rush across the road.. We don't dawdle like we are owed something neither.. Politeness costs nothing. Kindness kills.

It's not. It's a common thing everywhere, but the UK is one of the few places where people actually give a way to others. 😅

I was brought up to be polite and always say please and thank you, I always say thank you if someone is polite to me, just the other day I lost my purse, and some kind person found it, everything was still in there, I dont have much but now she gets nice fresh eggs from me when ever she wants them...

I do - and nearly everyone in my part of the Cotswolds does. in Yorkshire when staying with a friend, he said that, on rural back roads they just do the very subtle lifting one finger from the steering wheel. ☝️ anyone confirm that?

In the countryside in New Zealand you also just do it to anyone you drive past as the assumption is that you all know each other.
