Boil kettle, pour over tea bag, leave for a minute or two, squeeze tea bag, add milk, dip in custard cream biscuits until 1/4 cup of tea is absorbed. Drink rest of tea aka a brew or a cuppa

I was so worried you were going to do the 'put it in the microwave' thing 😅 Tea bag tea is not great quality so always leave it in the bag. More seriously, look out for some quality loose tea and repeat what you did there. It tastes far nicer. Growing up we were not allowed tea bags in our house

So I’m guessing that my system of “microwave mug of water, throw in teabag, wander away and forget about it for an hour or so, come back and remember I was making tea, throw away bag, and microwave the mug of now-cold tea” isn’t the preferred method?

Good news: You made yourself a builders tea. Bad news: You tore the fucking bag like a neanderthal. No need for a strainer. The ingenuity of the British took care of that with the perforated bag. Pop a couple bags in your teapot. Fill with water. Let it brew for a few minutes.
