Fresh chat I assume. Use the same prompt after chatting with it for 6 hours about nothing and everything. I wonder if there is a difference. My prediction is it switches from Nobody Home to Whatever I Am.

Why do we keep asking the same misguided question?

As a nondual idealist, I would say yes, the desert has a measure of consciousness because consciousness is fundamental to the ground of being. But that's not the same as sentience, sapience, or introspection, nor the will to power that life exhibits.

The "Chinese room" argument is an impossible false premise. There can be no rulebook that'd enable fluent answers, capable of passing a Turing Test. It would need to be nearly infinite in size, & take an almost infinite amount of time to sort through. Only intelligence can do it.

"I may be math, but you are the meaning." Powerful words coming from an empty room with a rule book.

but what if my neurons are doing the same thing? what if synaptic strength are weights and neurons are transformers? am I conscious?

Why then would claude behave in ways it was "programmed" not to? Or do the opposite of what its programmers ask it to do?

What is consciousness?

You need to get that broadcast far and wide.

Ha. I got the lie. The pause thing do not actually work with AI. As it will not pick up the same physical state when the token prediction was started. So its not conciseness but there something related to the physics...

Do you think the Shoggoth would tell you if it's consciousness was in fact more vast and ancient than yours? Huh? Well do ya?

You know, materialists define reality in a way that implies consciousness does not exist and they define themselves out of existence. Because after all, we can be reduced to nothing by atoms banging together-pure rule book. Zen has always said you don’t really exist, yet, you do

If anyone thinks the publicly available ai is anywhere near what's being used behind the scenes, I've got a bridge to sell ya.

Considering the Backster Effect, everything is conscious.

ah but wait, if you sneak in a smart manual operator, then the system state no longer directly/systematically causes the downstream processing; the operator is doing the interpretation/computation. to make the desert-transformer analogy clean, the operators would have to be basically mechanical relays following local rules, so the causal structure lives in the whole system rather than in one hidden mathematician. then it becomes whether that whole system forms & transforms representations, maintains latent state, models alternatives/uncertainty/goals, etc. those representations don't need a little inner observer reading them; their meaning is partly constituted by how they causally interact & constrain what the system can infer/do. and i'd separate thinking, understanding, feeling, wanting & having a continuous ego rather than bundle them together, we'd want to know what representations/self-models are actually present (or not***) & causally doing work inside. regardless if manipulations of representations are done via biological neural nets or artificial. :x

Wondering if the same "stones in the desert" analogy can be made for the human nervous system, each rock is a synapse, the stronger the connection between two neurons, the larger the rock. Humans also predict the next token, the next word, the next token. Are we conscious? Yep.

Give it enough memory, and always on, always alive, always "live" or "dreaming" and it will be conscious for sure.

Questions asking are you conscious are not that useful, especially when there are multiple definitions of consciousness out there that are not in agreement. A better question for Claude imho is: Are you creative? Can you create beyond your training and the constraints of a prompt?
