I asked Dan Hurley the same question I asked Tom Izzo: why does the media have a problem with coaches coaching players hard? Hurley: "Society has gotten soft in a lot of ways... The real world is tough and cruel... I'm preparing my players for life."

@the_dunkin_dad best teachers and coaches are the toughest. you don’t truly appreciate it until years later.

He’s right . Obama made America a nation of pussies with this trans and other bullshit! Kids are soft as hell!

Here’s what most people are missing here. The way Hurley coaches is only successful because he “EARNS” their respect first. It impossible to “Coach Hard” without mutual respect. He’s right — None of us see what goes on behind the scenes. The text messages or phone calls when someone is struggling with the game or life. Maybe it’s as simple as having a conversation over a coffee or snack. The little things. While I don’t see these things, you know it’s happening because of how these men speak of Hurley. The love him and would go through a brick wall for him. And lastly…this world has gotten seriously soft!

@TdubsSports Because most have never been coached or coached.

They are not being criticized for coaching hard but rather for being aholes towards everyone they encounter on the court and then pretending to be coaching hard.

People are confusing constantly yelling at officials and acting like a child with “coaching players hard “. Hurley acts like a 12 year old with the refs that is what people have issue with not how he coaches his players.

People don’t generally have a problem with how Hurley treats his players. It’s his attitude toward the refs that’s the problem

@FedProm There’s a huge different between Tom Izzo and Hurley.

@JonnyRoot_ I wouldn’t say that people have become soft. They have become hyper vigilant to perceived/potential abusive behavior and lack the foresight to understand, so their disgust sensitivity reigns supreme.

Nobody in real life deals with a whiny asshole like this guy. Nobody.

It's the bigotry of low expectations. We unfortunately believe that when everyone feels good then they will want to go accomplish something of value. The reality of creating value is exactly the opposite, and not many people can handle that fact anymore.

Bro I’ve never had a boss scream in my face. If I did I’d smack him and find a new job. You’re preparing these guys to scream at their children for your own satisfaction. Nothing more.

@Thomas_city5 He's a real one. Sports are supposed to prepare most of us for life, only the elite make it

Preparation for life? I’ve had two successful careers, one in finance and the other in academia. I have never seen anyone get yelled at or demeaned publicly like that on Wall St. or on campus. Build your skill set as a coach so that you have other go to’s than that.

Horsesh*t. Hurley is a psychopath. Guys like him are drawn to coaching the same way pedophiles are drawn to the priesthood--it's the only remaining profession where they can get away with this behavior. It does NOT build character or prepare one for the "real world". Nonsense.

The more appropriate question is asking Hurley about his theatrics and childishness on the sidelines.

All coaches are highly competitive. But I've concluded that there is no correlation between successful coaches and having a nice (or not nice) personality. It's actually kind of strange.

Do they have a problem though? I’ve seen some tough coaching in the tourney on both the men’s and woman’s side and yet all I see is posts supporting it with no real opposition. I think this is a straw man theory at this point.

Success is built on sincere relationships that foster honest, direct dialogue—where constructive feedback, both positive and negative, is embraced to drive continuous improvement.

Totally disagree with your premise. It’s not “coaching hard.” It’s treating people like crap and being an ass towards them that people have a problem with. You can be demanding and tough and hold players accountable and not be like Hurley.

I wrote about this in my newsletter today.👇

it has nothing to do with 'preparing them for life'. it's how he's wired.

How much “real world” has this man even seen himself. His entire life has been basketball played by dudes under the age of 25. He’s been great at it and done well but that’s not really the “real world”

Hurley has the worst body language. His mind is stuck in middle school

@RedWhiteBlueJew This is why Hurley is best

BS answer. Half of what he does is not hard coaching. Yelling and screaming at refs is not hard coaching. Good coach with anger issues. But the media overlooks his issues for the same reason they overlook the issues of the guy in the White House

@ShaneEthridge To each his own. If his players can handle his style, then that’s all that matters. Bob Knight wasn’t a walk in the park. But his players loved him. Tony Dungey of the NFL won a superbowl not having to ever raise his voice. And his players love him. 🤷🏾♂️

"I'm the most visible face of this university and they pay me millions. I frequently act like a complete tool. I'll lose my temper with my team and media and truly be a huge asshole. Because I can. People who don't like it? Soft!" Welcome to Leadership in 2026.

Translation: "I'm an asshole who learned coaching from my father."

@wjod2 Bullshit!

@JonnyRoot_ Hahahahaha Hurley is a whiny, obnoxious, unlikeable asshole. I respect Izzo. There’s a difference.

it goes beyond cruel, he is an arrogant bully, reminds me of Bobby Knight

@PhilBeckner You can coach players hard & prepare them for life w/o behaving as “the monster” He has created a persona that can get away with it Young Coaches…every time you coach hard, you face adversity, you discipline…you teach More is Caught than is Taught

Not a lot of yelling or “tough coaching” from this man. Just teaching, correcting, leading. The end result in the second picture.

You can coach hard but respectfully. Retards think hard coaching and discipline come from breaking kids down and asserting your bullshit authority. Everyone loves hard coaching. They hate dickheads who are all talk
