In 2009, after two back surgeries, my doctors told me I would never walk again without the assistance of a cane or walker. I gave up. l wrote out my suicide note and was ready to end it all. But, in that moment, my three-year-old son Matthew walked into my bedroom and saved my life. I truly believe it was an intervention from God. After that moment, I cried out to God and told him that if he showed me the way, I would put in the hard work to dig myself out of that bed and dig my family out of poverty. My mindset changed. I used to see myself as a victim. I would ask myself "Why me?" After that moment, I started to tell myself "Why not me?" I worked hard to overcome the obstacles I faced in my life and I will work even harder to become the first black Republican elected to Congress in the history of Ohio.

I had only R50 left, and it was just enough for going to and coming back from my graduation. I went to that taxi stop all dressed up, makeup done, looking like I belonged to every dream I had prayed for. The taxi stopped, and I got in. I could feel the stares from the other passengers, but honestly... I didn't care. I had already decided that nothing was going to ruin my day. I fought too hard for that graduation moment to let anything steal it from me. I attended my graduation alone, without family members by my side, because of the situation at home. And that taught me something powerful: The moment you accept your home situation and your family background is the moment you stop comparing yourself to other people. You realize your journey is different. Your race is different. Your story is different. If I didn't fight, this graduation wouldn't have happened. We can't choose where we come from, but we can choose where we go from there. And I'm choosing to keep going.
