I built a new plugin! You can now trigger Codex from Claude Code! Use the Codex plugin for Claude Code to delegate tasks to Codex or have Codex review your changes using your ChatGPT subscription. Start by installing the plugin:

We love an open ecosystem! The Codex plugin is built on top of the Codex app server so it uses the same open-source agent harness as the rest of Codex. It means you can run multiple Codex tasks in parallel in the background, use the same models and the same Codex code review functionality! Claude approves.

omg! add support for review the plan mode! I was using a handcrafted method. 😂

You can ask it to do that but will see if I can add a good built-in alternative

This is funny! Codex needs to build a plugin for Claude code, given users' poor use of Codex.

love this. been building something complementary: a shared git repo protocol where claude and codex coordinate with full project context, decisions, blockers, and rich handoffs across sessions. the plugin is perfect for quick reviews and task delegation. the protocol handles deep multi-session coordination where both AIs need the full picture.

@OpenAIDevs I expect to see a lot of “You’re absolutely right!” from Claude Code when using this with Codex.

Might be dump question. What is the difference between using codex MCP and this solution? I would appreciate it if you could answer 🙏

dominik kundel's profile picture
dominik kundel6 months ago

The Codex MCP is a simpler but more limited interface. The plugin uses the Codex app server under the hood. That's the same protocol that the Codex app uses so there is more control into adding functionality like the actual review feature from the app/CLI. Because it's not an MCP it also doesn't bloat your context window the same way. If the MCP works well for you great! This is an alternative 🙂

Thanks for the detailed explanation Super clear now — the plugin gives more control and features (like proper reviews) by using the full Codex app server under the hood, without bloating the context window like MCP does. Appreciate you building this bridge between Claude Code and Codex. Looks really powerful from the video. Will definitely give it a try!

just tell claude to use codex exec, tmux and you can snoop too but why bother, dont overcomplicate it bro 🥺

If that works well for you go for it 🙂

the background task thing is the real unlock. being able to get a second opinion from codex while you keep working in claude code is genuinely useful - I keep hitting moments where I'm stuck waiting for review and losing flow. this is less about which tool wins and more about just having both available when you need them

Very cool. Does this instance of codex still reference agents.md or is it just getting context from the Claude code session?

dominik kundel's profile picture
dominik kundel6 months ago

@colorinthough It's the equivalent of spinning up a Codex CLI in the same working directory as Claude Code except that Claude can directly communicate with it. So yes it will pick up the same config and AGENTS.md
