50 machines is Kardashev Type 0.5 speedrun strategy. the open source ecology guys have been on this since 2003, slowly closing the loop. what's interesting is that the number keeps compressing as fabrication tech improves, it was 250 machines in 2010. the floor might be lower than 50

Thinking this indicates not understanding what “civilization” IS. Ancient Rome had “civilization” without any of this techy crap. A civilization is a group of people acting civil to one another and cooperating to live well and build shit. All it takes for it to thrive is getting rid of the uncivilized people. Expel or hang the barbarians and criminals, you get civilization. Import the barbarians and pardon the criminals, civilization collapses. Barbarism and warlords thrive. Really that simple.

This is an amazing initiative and should be supported. I sometimes wondered, if a war or anything wipes out most of human knowledge and engineers, how do we get back to the current state of tech? We should collect all the knowledge necessary to get from raw materials to all the important machines that we need, massively replicate it, and place it somewhere safe.

Open Source Ecology is a hoax. It falsely claims to be independent but, in fact, it depends on the outputs of a large commercial manufacturing base. They order factory-made off-the-shelf parts like engines, hydraulic pumps and cylinders, steel and assemble janky machinery from that. It is just one eccentric guy's amateurish hobby. It can never be a replacement for industry because it depends on industry. If you have a lot of free time and want to build your own farm equipment for the fun of it, go for it. But do not delude yourself into believing that doing that has any economic or social significance.

Every time someone posts some of the work that we were involved with, I like to highlight the CEB (Compressed Earth Brick) press, since I think that was some of our best work.

I think you are missing “the mother of all machine tools”. It’s called that because it can make every part from which it is made & can make every other tool as well or the tool to make the tool to make the tool. David Gingery taught how to make one. It’s called a “Metal Lathe”.

All of which require gas or electricity. If you start from scratch you must figure out how to refine natural resources otherwise you have 50 machines that are useless.

how long will it take to build one working digger or mine to get a source of iron for the other machines? how long to discover and access productive iron reserves? and do the same for the full list of needed metals and minerals. we already depleted most easily accessible resources, the ones that helped build current civilization. to bootstrap from true scratch requires more than good instructions.

No mill and no lathe lol. Just the two tools that more or less have made everything since the Industrial Revolution.

AI makes this kind of open source knowledge infinitely more useful. knowing what to build is one thing, having a model help you execute it is another.

Chinese are not so sure

I love how this guy doesn’t account for maintenance. U got WD 40, grease, and chain lubricant for all those machines. “Muh windmill” it takes more energy to build the thing than it will ever produce. People just are not educated and it’s sad.

People can't build shsst when they Aren't skilled at anything...or even grasp the concept of making...

This is my favorite civilian project. The truck is still in the works but vehicles like it could become the new people's car. Cheaper, easy to repair, interchangeable parts with other machines...
