'I cannot understand...how after having had a 28.9% pay increase from this government, resident doctors are now saying: "we're going on strike".' Health Secretary Wes Streeting says there is 'no precedent for this in the history of British trade unions'.

Let’s break that down into reality, shall we @wesstreeting? The majority of the uplift pay came from the Conservatives, and only after multiple rounds of industrial action. It took a fully qualified resident doctor from around £14/hr to £18.62/hr. We are asking for £22.67/hr. That’s the inflation adjusted rate we would have been on in 2008 had pay not been eroded by 21%. A fair wage for a highly skilled professional responsible for hundreds of patients, often working nights, weekends, and holidays. Are you seriously saying a doctor isn’t worth £22.67 an hour?

Wes says 28.9% is unprecedented. What’s also unprecedented? Doctors earning just £17.56/hour after 15 years of erosion. That’s the rate for saving lives, running wards, and covering rota gaps. Striking isn’t reckless. It’s the result of being undervalued for far too long.

@wesstreeting You can’t understand??? Quite simple… when they know they are dealing with a weak government that folded without any conditions last year, it was obvious to the rest of us that they’d come knocking again! Remember when you scoffed at the Tories having doctors going on strike!

@wesstreeting Let's talk about progress: Failed on workforce planning, 20,000 doctors locked out of training this year. Failed on pay, only 0.9% towards a 23% pay erosion. Failed on delivering overtime reforms agreed last summer.
