If you have an empty property just install a temporary security system with a camera that is monitored. They are completely wireless and don't even need house power or a land line. Cheap insurance to prevent this sort of thing.

If you have an empty home like this that you are trying to sell or rent, introduce yourself to the neighbors. Make sure they know who you are and tell them that you will let them know when the place is rented or sold and to call you if anyone starts moving in without warning.
