My buddy once got a caribou kill in Alaska when we lived in the army barracks. It was literally just before deployment and he put all of his belonging including the antlers into storage for the year long deployment. He did not know you have to get them treated first. When he got his things back the antlers had rotted away and ruined almost all of his belongings.

Based on the research I did on the subject it would appear this was done correctly, all nerve endings were likely dead and the antlers have properly matured meaning the deer was unharmed while harvesting the velvet

It's supposed to come off naturally. The animal scratches it off and eats it in due time. That velvet is packed with nutrition the animal needs. Certain humans intervene on nature way too excessively.
