Shift the car to NEUTRAL ! Then apply the Emergency Brake. Do not turn the engine off. As long as the engine is running you have steering. Do not worry about destroying the transmission if it shifts to reverse or Park. It can be replaced, you cannot be.

1. Shut off the car 2. Put the car in neutral (There is nothing stopping the shifter) 3. Last resort is to smash the side of the car against the concrete median. No matter what, I’m not just gonna freak out and let everyone die without using all my options. 911 was a waste of time. There were four people in that car. Had they stayed calm and figured out a plan maybe things would have ended differently. Idk but either way this is a super sad story 😔

What he should have done was drop the car into neutral and turn off the ignition. The accelerator does nothing when the car is in neutral. 9/11 operator should have told them quickly.

It’s called, put the vehicle in NEUTRAL. This happened to me in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I put it in neutral and pulled over. It works, everytime. 911 operators need better training.

How would you have stopped this? This is the problem with putting too much tech into cars. Even your emergency brake is electronic now.

Fyi there was nothing wrong with the pedals in these cars Got stuck by floor mats. Mass hysteria did the rest Source: knew the techs who worked on them

Hate to speak ill, but brakes can almost always overpower the engine. You could always throw it in neutral stop and kill the engine.

I'm confused... why didn't he just shift into neutral, shut the engine off, and pull the park(emergency) brake?

There’s not a single vehicle built, with functioning brakes, that won’t overcome the accelerator being stuck wide open.
