As a demo, we deployed a fully off-grid solar + battery system that powers an AI data center 24/7, at a power price lower than Northern Virginia. These batteries may lose range in cars, but they still have a ton of useful life — and we’re putting that juice to work. Batteries don’t die when cars get traded in. A 300-mile EV battery that drops to 250 miles still has enormous value. Working with J.B. Straubel’s Redwood Materials, we reused these end-of-life batteries to power an AI data center around the clock, fully off-grid, solar + storage — and cheaper than the biggest data center market in the U.S.

Lithium battery fires have featured far too often in news headlines. These fires often ignite without warning, they're difficult to extinguish and are not confined to #EVs. Everything from eScooters to electric toothbrushes carries the risk for #thermal runaway and considered hazardous materials. I asked about the ACCC's report on Lithium-Ion Batteries and Consumer Product Safety during the recent senate estimates. The report advocates for a national product safety incident database to capture lithium ion battery fires. Senator Gallagher responded positively and I look forward to quick action on this problem from the Government.

The Tulsa Fire Department released the following video to warn people about the "dangers of lithium-ion batteries." Two dogs and a cat were filmed hanging out before one of the dogs started the fire with the battery pack. The animals were filmed in the living room on an indoor monitoring camera, observing the fire before it got out of hand. "Lithium-ion batteries are known for storing a significant amount of energy in a compact space," the fire department said. "However, when this energy is released uncontrollably, it can generate heat, produce flammable and toxic gases, and even lead to explosions." The pets were able to escape the home through a dog door.

If you look at the cost of solar power five years ago, 10 years ago, or 20 years ago, it would have seemed cost-prohibitive. But the cost of solar power today is extremely low. The cost of batteries to store that energy has also dropped dramatically. Battery storage costs have fallen by a factor of 10 in the past five years. So many of the studies that were done were done in times past, when batteries were very expensive and solar power was very expensive. I would just encourage everyone to take another look at the cost of solar and the cost of batteries. I think you’ll find that you’re pleasantly surprised. Elon Musk
