I remember 1st time coming to Hong Kong in 1993 & after looking at all the plastic/garbage in the water I thought no use doing anything at home to reduce waste we are finished as humans so awesome to read maybe I was wrong

Next time you visit Hong Kong we should meet -- I enjoy hearing about your life in rural Thailand with your chickens!

Yes, when I was a kid growing up in HK in the 60s, the harbour was full of floating garbage. The city was not beautified with flowers and landscaping. Shanty towns scattered all over on hillsides. The Brits siphoned all wealth back to borderline broke UK. I lived thru it, I know.

True, I’ve witnessed the improvements also. They made lots of progress. China looks much greener now than it used to 20 years ago when I first came.

Today I walked by the Hunghom ferry pier and saw people at the promenade fishing. I thought the water was very polluted and they couldn't eat anything that they manged to catch. I guess I was wrong and the water is clean.

Ah, the harbour finally returns to its original pristine state before the British filthy opium war on the Island. Good to see 👍

Very nice, now we need the Chinese government to assist with the rest. I’ve been to HK and it was a dump compared to Shenzhen or any other major Chinese city

@alimlwan Have they fixed the middle portion yet? I'm tired of pushing my kid's bike on the section that doesn't allow cycling

@Kathleen_Tyson_ Looks like a big improvement if true from when i was living there. Aren’t there random garbage floating around nowadays?

Nury Vittachi's profile picture
Nury Vittachi2 months ago

@Kathleen_Tyson_ They have boats that go round literally picking up bits of garbage piece by piece. I have seen a dogged cleaner on a boat chasing a plastic bottle carried by the waves

HK’s sea pollution was largely a result of industrialisation in China with poor regulation in the old days, not simply British or Chinese rule. The Chinese government has made major efforts in recent years to tackle pollution and restore nature.

There’s still chests of opium in the bottom of the harbour?

A couple wks ago while running @ WestK TST, watched this guy, rushed his breakfast and gulped a drink fr a plastic bottle & just before he boarded water taxi, he just threw the bottle to the harbour, I was so pissed, as he jumped to the boat and didn't have time to yell at him.

Remember to disregard mainstream media writings about China. The actual data/ statistics show that the majority of seafood (about 75%) consumed in China comes from aquaculture farms

You're right! I never thought that I would see fishes around the water front in Tseng Kwun O , i.e. Junk Bay. But they were there just this last April. And the water was so clean and clear that could compare to the Repluse Bay.

That's amazing I have never seen fish there! how did they clean it? I lived on Pok Fum Lam side so only saw fish on boat junk boats to Lamma.

Hong Kong replaced direct sewage dumping with deep underground tunnels for waste. The stuff (wastewater) goes to a central plant on Stonecutters Island for advanced chemical treatment

The fish was always there, plenty of it. Nothing changed. But the dolphins are gone because of the bridge.

Nury Vittachi's profile picture
Nury Vittachi2 months ago

Not really correct, Joanna. There were multiple factors in the decline of dolphins, as studies have shown. The south China dolphin has about 2,000 individuals and recent studies (there was one in June) say it is "viable" to survive as a group with careful management

Nury Vittachi's profile picture

@Lam_mour Let me try to explain it simply. It's not binary. Seas aren't usually either full of fish or empty of fish. Polluted water ways have small number of fish you can't eat. Clean ones have large numbers you can eat. Hope that helps, Mr Hobson

What species of fish are these?

Nury Vittachi's profile picture
Nury Vittachi2 months ago

As a true Hong Konger, my classification of fish species stretches between two types: "edible" and "non-edible", Erik
