I was fascinated the first time I saw this type of car wash in America. This was in early 2008 when I first came. I thought of starting something similar in Nigeria. I went to work, ran the numbers, called up vendors, suppliers, and franchisees. My research showed that I would need about a million dollars to start this in Lekki. I was able to secure an investor. The only problem was that they wanted me to physically be in Nigeria to manage it. That was how the idea died. I wasn’t going to leave my PhD unfinished to chase something so risky even though there was a chance it might take off big time. Alternative history is pure speculation. Each time I take my car for a wash, I still wonder what would have happened if I had returned to Nigeria in 2009 with a $1M investment to start this business. I guess we would never know. And, no, I’m not about to find out anymore.
