I had never seen Ghost in the Shell until a few months ago. I assumed it would be underwhelming. It's a 90's anime and even if good —probably been done to death, right? I was wrong, and this clip nestled in the middle demonstrates the unbelievable artistry of the film.

Boy I know you didn't just speak dismissively about 90's anime, and 90's Sci-fi anime no less. As if everything made since then hasn't been a wet fart by comparison. Go watch Cowboy Bebop right now and repent.

Don't worry I just worded it badly. The idea was that when you go back to watch something 30 years old that is beloved its parts have been endlessly regurgitated by later works so the original feels like it's riddled with tropes.

@LaughlessVR The artistry youre highlighting in your original tweet is almost exclusive to 90s anime, however It couldn't have been "done to death" because cel animation is dead and even high quality animation these days doesn't have the wow factor of how detailed older stuff is (see Bebop).

@LaughlessVR That's exactly what I very quickly learned while watching this one. The different methods and incentive makes much of the 90's work stand out. I did watch some Bebop after this and was duly impressed.

Often true, but we've all been burned before. I was pleased to have all my skepticism demolished and expectations humbled. I've used the Akira manga as an inking reference for years but I'll definitely watch the film now.

I’m quite happy with the films like Golgo 13 Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D,many of which played on late night cable in the 90s People sleep on stuff because it’s “old” and I just never understood that.

Have you seen Akira? Same time period and is just as good if not better.

I haven't but it's on my list to watch this summer.

Love the scene. If you watch GitS 2, there’s a parade sequence that took them ~a year to make.

Oshii At his best/worst. The amount of time characters talk about philosophy is way higher than expected

@NormENPC @jholtillus SAC is the best installment in the whole GITS franchise. Goes way more in detail on the world, characters, tech, etc. with each season having a great overarching plot as well as more self contained episodes that can be just as great

Mamoru Oshii has amazing vision. This opening scene from Patlabor 2 (and many of the themes from the animated film) continue to remain very relevant and resonant with social and geopolitical realities.

Keep going. Innocence, the sequel is great. Both seasons of the Stand Alone Complex series are great. Same with the movie, Stand Alone Society. Arise feels a bit off, but it's still great compared to most other anime. SAC 2045 is excellent, but not as philosophicalr as the others.

It is a work of art. Together it is great, but even the small pieces, the little moments, the are so beautiful.

90s anime is literally the peak of technical animation.

Makes me want to watch it again for the millionth time.

They hit a lot of really great topics. Future technologies, war zones. Waiting on the next series, its suppose to align to the original and not many really understand the manga, I'm kind of one of them, was more a heavy metal fan growing up.

Not really. Most of the modern shows tax me with non-stop high energy. This was a completely different feel.

Well I don't reccomend anime that often because people's taste for it varies wildly, but if you ever do want to check out some films on the same level as Ghost, I'd suggest the works of Satoshi Kon.

Miyazaki has that incredible depth. My experience with modern action anime had built up the expectation that the spectacle alone was what had made GitS legendary. Turns out it was much more.

It's such a good movie. I'm pissed that they fumbled the live action remake - all they had to do was follow it shot by shot!

Watch Patlabor 2--its my personal favorite Oshii film. U don't need to watch the first film (though it is fun), 2 goes in its own direction. It's a very modern feeling film, with a haunting soundtrack and incredible shot composition. A certain snowfall scene stands out as genius

The first time I watched Ghost in the Shell I was maybe 15. I’m over 40 now. It is still my favorite animated film. Hands down.

I kept noticing my mouth was hanging open while watching it. I kept missing movement in the foreground because I was staring at the backgrounds. Unbelievable. I went in as a skeptic.
