The Lindy hop is an African American dance which was born in Harlem, New York City. On that date, the Lindbergh Spirit of St. Louis airplane completed the first transatlantic flight by air, the Newspaper reported “Lindy Hops the Atlantic” and the dance style adopted the headline. The dance has evolved since then with the jazz music of that time and was very popular during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway, and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. In its development, the Lindy hop combined elements of both partnered and solo dancing by using the movements and improvisation of African dances along with the formal eight-count structure of European partner dances most clearly illustrated in the Lindy's basic step, the swing-out. In this step's open position, dancers generally connected hand-to-hand; in its closed position, leads and follows are connected as though in an embrace on one side and holding hands on the other. Lindy hop is sometimes referred to as a street dance, referring to its improvisational and social nature. On March 27, 1932, twelve-year-old Norma Miller did the Lindy hop outside the Savoy Ballroom with her friends for tips. In 1935, 15,000 people danced on Bradhurst Avenue for the second of a dance series held by the Parks Department. Between 147th and 148th street, Harlem "threw itself into the Lindy hop with abandon" as Sugar Hill residents watched from the bluffs along Edgecombe Avenue. There was renewed interest in the dance in the 1980s from American, Swedish, and British dancers and the Lindy hop is now represented by dancers and loosely affiliated grass-roots organizations globally.

DisCo: Disentangled Control for Referring Human Dance Generation in Real World paper page: Generative AI has made significant strides in computer vision, particularly in image/video synthesis conditioned on text descriptions. Despite the advancements, it remains challenging especially in the generation of human-centric content such as dance synthesis. Existing dance synthesis methods struggle with the gap between synthesized content and real-world dance scenarios. In this paper, we define a new problem setting: Referring Human Dance Generation, which focuses on real-world dance scenarios with three important properties: (i) Faithfulness: the synthesis should retain the appearance of both human subject foreground and background from the reference image, and precisely follow the target pose; (ii) Generalizability: the model should generalize to unseen human subjects, backgrounds, and poses; (iii) Compositionality: it should allow for composition of seen/unseen subjects, backgrounds, and poses from different sources. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel approach, DISCO, which includes a novel model architecture with disentangled control to improve the faithfulness and compositionality of dance synthesis, and an effective human attribute pre-training for better generalizability to unseen humans. Extensive qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that DISCO can generate high-quality human dance images and videos with diverse appearances and flexible motions.

Belly dancing history crosses many cultural boundaries, getting its start in Middle East and Africa, and moving on to evolve in western cultures as both a form of cultural dance and exotic entertainment. In 21st Century, genre has gained considerable popularity all around the world. Belly dance, an exotic form of dance that has a rich history that dates back over 6000 years. Some people consider ‘Oriental dance’ to be a dance of seduction, whilst others believe that belly dance originated as fertility ritual. Throughout Middle Eastern history, belly dance has been performed at special celebrations and occasions like weddings, birth announcements, and festivals. All over the world, belly dancing courses are taught to teach freedom of movement and to empower women to love their bodies and to have more confidence. Term "belly dance" a westernized name that originally referred to traditional Middle Eastern dancing. Earliest forms of belly dance were Egyptian ghawazi dance during 19th Century and Raqs Sharqi, an Arabic dance of 20th Century. Despite Egypt's location in Africa and contributions from other nations such as France, Turkey and United States, term belly dance is usually used today to include all traditional dances of Middle Eastern region, including those not geographically situated there. French explorers travelling in Egypt, in 18th Century CE, witnessed dancers performing an exotic dance that they decided to call ‘dance du ventre’ (dance of the stomach). In 1893 CE, promoter Sol Bloom, introduced belly dance to America, at Chicago World’s Fair. In those days, it was considered to be daring if a woman revealed so much as an ankle. Belly dance was therefore initially seen as being risqué and shocking. Interest in intriguing dance grew and quickly spread to other cities. Westernised form of belly dance grew in popularity following Hollywood film industry’s involvement in publicising dance as a form of entertainment. Egyptian dancers Tahia Carioca and Samia Gamal wore elaborate belly dance costumes in their movies and became international stars. Belly dance has been active in Turkey since 1400s, when travelling tribes known as ‘chengis’ performed on streets. Today, chengis still dance to entertain tourists and perform a style of belly dance that is authentically Turkish. In traditional Muslim society, women often gathered to perform a dance in evening. Known as Raks sharki (dance of the East), this type of belly dance helped women to ready stomach muscles for childbirth, and was also danced by young women to display their readiness for marriage. In present-day Egypt, it’s customary to hire a belly dancer to perform at a wedding, in order to bless happy couple with a fertility ritual blessing. Fred Astaire explains how the outfit of the dancing partner can affect the performance by citing the example of this dance scene [Cheek to Cheek] in 'Top Hat' (1935): "The dancing dresses of my partners have, for years, been a working problem, and in 'Top Hat' I dare say it reached its dizzy peak. I seldom discuss the style of a dress but I am concerned with how it will dance, or rather, react to the dance. Therefore, my partners are usually willing to let me help in choosing them. Girls love to wear slacks when learning or rehearsing a dance. They are comfortable and convenient and allow complete freedom of movement. Ginger Rogers always wore them for rehearsal. In act, Hermes and I were so used to seeing Ginger on the rehearsal stage in slacks that one day when she showed up in a dress we didn’t know who she was. What I’m getting at is that when putting on a dance, experimenting over and over with various steps, the slacks work perfectly, but when we finally have to get ready to shoot, it is necessary to try everything with a dress, the actual dress if possible, to see how things will go. That’s when the awful awakening takes place, the realization that in some instances it is not possible to do the steps as planned with the dress. If the gown happens to be very full at the hem, for instance, it automatically becomes “our” dress instead of just my partner’s, as it wraps around my feet, causing no end of trouble and hindrance to both of us.
