It’s called propioception and it’s caused because some of the images are smaller for larger than others so it triggers the eyes to refocus even though they are on a fixed point.

To me I would think it is pretty obvious what is happening although very creepy. Your eyes are used to seeing the same face at the same time to separate eyes so your brain is trying to make the one look like an image of the other a three-dimensional image So if the one is tall it makes the other one look tall so a small woman's face next to a tall man's face the woman's face becomes distorted and looks tall I'm pretty sure you could try to keep all the faces about the same size and shape and this wouldn't happen. And you would notice if you put a tall one in or one with a big chin it would cause you to have this more often. Obviously let's see if it works if you put the same face on both sides

I believe it is from the light contrast changing so frequently.

Your brain isn't able to let go of the previous image fast enough before the next one, so it blends some of the previous image into the new one. Boom. Solved. Next question. I'll take, "It's probably the jews" for one penny, Alex.

This is how Candyman, Bloody Mary, etc. types of spooky games work. You're staring into a mirror, presumably with your friends on the periphery of your vision
