I have been saying for weeks that we should implement a 5-10% blanket tariff on all imports. We can then remove tariffs as an incentive system for specific products. Today President Trump announced this exact type of plan with a 10% tariff on most imports.

Tariffs = local corporate tax and are always paid by someone: 1. If the firm has bargain power (wide margins): consumers pay 2. firm doesn't have bargain power: shareholders thru lower share price or labor thru layoffs shareholders are currently paying for unrealized tariffs

The US imports most of its potash and 85% of it comes from Canada. The US only produces 420,000 metric tons which is less than 10% of its demand. A tariff will be devastating for Canada but more so for the US which has no other options but imports for a long time. Canadian potash producer Nutrien just announced opening an export terminal in Washington.
