this was a great read (sick animations!) but I wish you had also added usage/access patterns (sequential/random) for SSDs too. The tape drive, HDD both had them

Good point! The garbage collection section kinda encapsulates that, but a dedicated example pair would make it more clear.

Javascript, Ruby, and Go all use garbage collectors for memory management. But did you know your SSD has a garbage collector (GC) too? SSDs with high write/delete traffic are constantly being reorganized by the GC, which is built directly into the firmware running on the SSD controller. This is one of the reasons why sequential writes are still preferable to random, even if you aren't using a spinning disk.
