I just noticed a second hailstone (white circle) bouncing incredibly high in this clip from Kankakee. I noticed the first one (red) fairly soon after. My theory for such a high bounce was perhaps a tampoline in the Walmart parking lot...but if these were natural bounces, those stones had... to be incredibly large and dense to achieve such a thing. Id be willing to bet they're among the highest bounces ever documentedshow more

Yes...should've stopped pursuit of the tornado but at the same time, tracking it to keep people informed is very important.

Judging you were in the RFD and it was so strong, wouldn’t be shocked if those bounces were more like skippers. Just that high because as you said the Density and weight. Either way whatever happened, impressive height.

@Becca_Furnish You’d think that those being natural bounces aren’t even physically possible right? Someone who knows a lot of math could probably figure it out. Could’ve hit a tent roof too?

@Becca_Furnish Perhaps...my first guess is stones of that size would puncture the tent unless its very strong, but I wouldn't rule anything out at this point

Maybe the canopy on the bottom left gave it a trampoline bounce

Oh that's easy, the tornado is helping with updraft and in flow. So the hailstone glide upwards after hitting a rigid surface. This would also explain why they seem to hover a while at max height.

Those hailstones come from all angles. I was trying to capture some on video once and got hit by one that came at me sideways. Never did that again.

Maybe a 60k ft anvil? That took some weight!

the hail stones are most likely hitting some rubber tires stacked up behind that fence by walmart
