I just visited one of 140 projects that used our emergency permit streamlining. Thx to early action funding from Governor & Legislature, fast work by Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy & permit waivers, this fuelbreak above Topanga is finishing before the coming Santa Ana’s.

🚨 URGENT: SANTA MONICA’S BELOVED BERGAMOT STATION ARTS CENTER IS BEING DEMOLISHED FOR APARTMENTS & PARKING GARAGES! OUR TAXPAYER-OWNED CULTURAL GEM IS UNDER ATTACK! 🚨 Bergamot Station Arts Center—our vibrant, taxpayer-owned hub of creativity, history, and community—is about to be WIPED OUT. This isn’t just some random lot; it’s an 8-acre cultural landmark, home to nearly 30 world-class art galleries, studios, theaters, & public events that draw thousands every year. It’s where artists thrive, where locals and tourists connect with contemporary art, and where our city’s soul shines through free workshops, performances, and exhibitions. This place, born from a historic 1875 rail yard and transformed in 1994 into a beacon of culture, is OURS—paid for and cherished by YOU, the taxpayer. And now? They’re tearing it down. For what? 707 homeless, affordable, and low-income apartments crammed into high-rises, alongside TWO massive parking structures, swallowing up not just Bergamot but also the taxpayer-owned lot hosting our iconic ice-skating and roller-skating rinks in downtown Santa Monica. 😡 This is OUR money being used to destroy OUR spaces! The City of Santa Monica claims this is to “solve homelessness,” but let’s be real: this reeks of a developer-driven land grab, erasing our cultural heritage for profit-driven projects. Bergamot’s 65,000 square feet of gallery space, its industrial charm, its role as one of the West Coast’s top arts destinations—GONE. The rinks where families make memories every season? GONE. Replaced by concrete towers and parking lots that’ll clog our streets and skyline. And who’s footing the bill? WE ARE. Your tax dollars are being funneled into bulldozing what makes Santa Monica special, all under the guise of “public good.” I walked through Bergamot today and filmed it—watch the video below to see the scale of this place, its energy, its art, its life. This isn’t just a loss for artists; it’s a gut-punch to every Santa Monican who values culture, community, and transparency. They’re ripping out our city’s heart without even asking us! Why are we letting this happen? Where’s the public vote? Where’s the accountability? Why are our tax dollars being used to erase spaces that make Santa Monica a destination, only to replace them with projects that scream mismanagement and greed? We’re told it’s for “housing solutions,” but destroying taxpayer-owned cultural and recreational landmarks isn’t the answer—it’s a betrayal.
