As a kid, I was in the Boy Scouts for 6 years. My dad was the troop master and I remember the other boys and the parents always being weird with me because of how "gay" or “effeminate" I was. My parents always stood beside me and protected me when it came to who I was or my self expression. I credit them with the confidence that I have today and l am so lucky and appreciative to them. Happy pride month! 🏳️‍🌈

My Chinese parents land today to meet their new grandson. I tell my kids "I love you" every day. My dad has never said it to me once. I know he loves deeply. He just never says it. I once overheard him reading "I Love You Through and Through" to my daughter. I froze. He was saying it. Over and over. Just not to me. A few years ago, I told a story for The Moth and NPR about my dad, and how we learned to speak love between the lines. It won the GrandSlam. I remember when the Head of the Sixth Form College that I attended in Leeds, England asked my what wanted to study at university. I replied it was always my dream to become a doctor. She laughed in my face & said that medical school is too competitive, I’ll never get in & to choose another course. She made me feel like I was a ‘dirty little immigrant with delusions of grandeur’. Being the sensitive soul that I am, her words hurts me. Her words hurt me a lot. But I refused to allow her to diminish my determination. Being an independent 18 year old student who was forced to leave my parents behind in Lebanon, I had to work 40 hours a week to survive. This was a constant threat to getting the necessary grades to secure a place in medical school. However, the suffering, struggling, sacrifices and hard work paid off. Not only did I get into medical school in Manchester, I later qualified as a doctor, became a Consultant NHS Psychiatrist, an Honorary Visiting Professor and book author. I’m in the Waterstones in Leeds to see a copy of my book for the first time. I’m sorry, I couldn’t hold back the emotions. Please NEVER stop believing in yourself & NEVER give up hope. My book is available to order: Breakthrough: A Story of Hope, Resilience and Mental Health Recovery

I've been riding horses since I was 4. Divorced parents and dad indulged me. That was the beginning of the end. I bought my first horse, on my own at the age of 20. His name was "I'm A Sporty Devil." He lived up to that name, he was jet black. Gorgeous. One week into it, he spun around, launched me into the air and I landed on my tailbone, broke it.
