Ronda’s most famous bridge was built after the first one collapsed into the gorge and killed around 50 people. That happened in 1741. The town still needed a way across El Tajo, the gorge that cuts Ronda in two, so they tried again. The replacement became the Puente Nuevo. Construction took decades. It was finally completed in 1793, with the bridge rising roughly 98 meters from the bottom of the ravine. If you’ve ever seen a photo of Ronda, you’ve probably seen it. What I didn’t realize at first was how important the bridge actually was to the town. El Tajo doesn’t sit somewhere outside Ronda. It runs right through it, with the Guadalevín River far below and neighborhoods on either side. The bridge wasn’t built to look impressive. People needed to get across. Much of the stone used to build it came from the gorge itself, which explains why the bridge looks almost like part of the cliff when you see it from below. I wouldn’t come here, take the usual photo and move on. Walk across the bridge first. Look down into the gorge. The drop is enough to make you watch where you’re standing. Then get below it. That’s where you really understand how big the thing is. From town, it’s a bridge. From the bottom of the gorge, it looks like someone built a stone wall nearly all the way up to Ronda. There’s plenty beyond the bridge too. The old quarter still follows streets laid out long before the Puente Nuevo existed, and Ronda’s Islamic past is still visible in places like the Arab baths near the river. There are older crossings as well. It’s called the New Bridge because Ronda already had bridges before it. I’d stay overnight if I could. Ronda is the kind of place that’s easy to turn into a quick stop on an Andalusia itinerary. Arrive, photograph the bridge, eat lunch, leave. I’d rather be there later, when some of the day-trippers are gone. Walk through the old streets. Cross the bridge again. Have dinner somewhere nearby and come back to the gorge without watching the clock. The Puente Nuevo is impressive even if you know nothing about it. But knowing that an earlier bridge collapsed, that the town spent decades building another one, and that people have been crossing it since 1793 makes it a lot harder to look at it as just another photo stop. jihoon knowing all the tiny details that women go through when preparing ourselves in going to concerts 🥹 he even knows that we get frustrated bc we dont look as perfect inside the venue compared to when we leave our houses and assured us that the thought of wanting to look pretty for him in itself already makes us beautiful 😭 HOW CAN U NOT LOVE THIS PERSON 🐶 i know that when it rains, your curled hair falls out and everything. i know that your makeup gets messed up and all that. i take all of that into consideration when i look at you, so please don’t worry about it too much. i just don’t pay that much attention to things like that, so don’t worry about it 🐶 isn’t it actually better that i know these things? if i didn’t know, you might think i would find it strange. but i know all of that. i know i know. so don’t worry about things like that 🐶 people with curly hair straighten their hair before coming, but then suddenly it starts getting curly again because of the humidity, and the volume in their hair completely dies down 🐶 i also know that you can leave home thinking “this is the prettiest i habe looked” and then when you arrive at the venue, you look so different from how you did at home, and then it can make you upset because the singer you like is going to see you like this. i know that. 🐶 no my hair gets flat too, and my makeup gets messed up too. when it rains and it gets humid, im like that too so what. ah you don’t have to be embarrassed. you don’t have to be embarrassed because i wont pay attention to it. you don’t have to be embarrassed. 🐶 just come comfortably, and dress up however you want. just think “i’m the prettiest today”, “i’m the coolest”. dress up looking your best and come. come and have fun. 🐶 isn’t everyone like that? when people are in front of someone they like, they want to look good right? they want to show their best selves. 🐶 but whenever it’s an important day, you get sick, or a pimple suddenly comes up on your face. and on days that aren’t important, your skin looks amazing, or you somehow keep losing weight. that’s just how life is for people. it’s not just me. you all probably experience that too. 🐶 because you want to meet us so badly, and because all your attention is focused on us, you might come with a pimple on your face. things might not go the way you want them to. i know all that. i’m a person just like you. i know what it’s like when something happens on an important day. just think of it as me not seeing those things. so come comfortably. 🐶 yeah i know you want to look pretty. and because i know how much you want to look pretty, you look pretty to me. that feeling itself is beautiful, you know? i’m grateful. it feels like you’re being considerate of me. 🐶 when you go to meet someone, getting dressed up instead of just going out carelessly is a consideration for the person you’re meeting. of course it’s also for yourself. of course you can’t help but look pretty. 🐶 whether your makeup gets messed up, your hair curls back up, or whatever happens, its the actions themselves, each and every one of them, are all good you guys. 💬 why are you making us so emotional? 🐶 i’m not saying it because i’m trying to make you emotional. it is genuinely how i feel. i’m not saying this because i thought, “i have to make them emotional.” it’s true. i really think this way. 🐶 TREASURE MAKERs, you’re all pretty. really.. you’re all pretty. i genuinely think that way.

We have this opportunity as a songwriter to tell an entire story. Or an entire movie. Or a very detailed description of one scene in a movie. Or a very nuanced dynamic between people or a complicated emotion. And we have only so long to do this. I’ve written some really long songs in my life. But, for the most part, they’re between 3.5 to 4 minutes. You can start painting the picture in the verse. You can get to the heart of it at the chorus. But then the bridge can be where you zoom back, you walk 20 feet back, and you see what this entire painting was supposed to be. You’ve seen brushstrokes. You’ve seen the color tones. But the bridge can be when you step back and you feel everything that that piece of art was supposed to make you feel. That’s just how I feel about bridges. I came up as a songwriter in Nashville, where structure is a huge part of how you effectively tell a story, right? You go verse - chorus - second verse - chorus - bridge - chorus. Maybe you repeat that first verse if you want to. If you want to pull at some heartstrings. If it makes sense. Now, that’s something that I absolutely subscribe to…that structure is important. But I think that when you write enough songs — at least in my case — the intuitive part of your songwriting brain can kind of create a new structure that’s not as classically what you’ve been taught. Jack Antonoff is a collaborator of mine and one of my best friends. We established this thing that we love to do and we call it the rant bridge. I could point to examples like, ‘Out of the Woods’, ‘Is It Over Now?’ or ‘Cruel Summer’. And oftentimes we love these rant bridges, where it’s basically like stream of consciousness. Endless pouring-out of emotion. Intrusive thoughts, blended with metaphor with discussion with shouting. You want this rant bridge to feel the most intense of what that feeling is…that you’re trying to, establish over the course of the song and you want it to kind of be a crescendo.” *** Full interview here:
