I know it’s a common misconception but she actually wasn’t viewed as a centrist while still in country music. Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift were widely seen as the most prominent liberal artists in country. The “Taylor conservative” thing has always been a smear by opposing stans.

It was never guaranteed that Taylor would be successful at pop. She stopped going to country music award shows after her announcement - even if she was nominated.
