🇺🇬 TOORO SUCCESSION STAND-OFF President Yoweri Museveni is expected to guide the next steps in the Tooro Kingdom succession dispute following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The dispute centres on conflicting claims over whether the late King left a son. Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki said the King left a young prince who is the heir, a claim later backed by Museveni after speaking to Queen Mother Best Kemigisa. However, Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, head of the Babiito Royal Clan, says the Royal Family was never informed of any child and insists the King had no child. A 21-member committee of Babiito elders, led by Kamurasi, has been formed to identify and announce the next King and oversee the traditional succession process. Government says the matter will be handled under the Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, 2011. If the community fails to resolve the dispute through customs and traditional mechanisms, the matter can be referred to court. Minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde urged Tooro leaders and subjects to avoid speculation and maintain peace and dignity as Uganda prepares for King Oyo’s burial. King Oyo died in the US aged 34. His remains are expected in Uganda on Friday, September 4, ahead of the royal funeral rites.

Today, I received the body of His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at Entebbe International Airport. The Queen Mother first informed me of his illness in November 2025, and we supported efforts to secure specialised treatment for him in Germany and later in the United States. Unfortunately, he died. Throughout his reign as King of Tooro, Oyo was a good person and a good leader. His passing is a great loss to the people of Tooro and Uganda. I encourage the people of Tooro to remain calm and avoid disorganisation, even in this difficult time. May the Lord grant him eternal rest. Amen.
