I like Kyle Theige's idea here about prioritizing roster flexibility over roster continuity. But I do wonder how much the Wolves' floor -- on both offense and defense -- disappears if *both* Randle and Gobert are not on the team next season. Some floor-raiser numbers on Randle and Gobert...

Charlotte w/ LaMelo Ball ON the floor last season O-rating: 125.0 D-rating: 115.3 Net rating: +9.7 Charlotte w/ LaMelo Ball OFF the floor last season O-rating: 113.4 D-rating: 113.6 Net rating: -0.2 For some context, that's an even bigger offensive improvement than the Wolves saw during those Julius Randle-Naz Reid minutes, when Rudy Gobert was off the floor. Minnesota w/ Rudy Gobert ON the floor last season O-rating: 113.6 D-rating: 108.8 Net rating: +4.9 Minnesota w/ Rudy Gobert OFF the floor last season O-rating: 122.1 D-rating: 120.6 Net rating: +1.5 And to also use those numbers as a reference, you can say LaMelo Ball helped Charlotte's offense as much last season (+11.6 o-rating) as Rudy Gobert help Minnesota's defense (-11.8 d-rating).

The Wolves offensive rating this season... Gobert ON: 113.7 Gobert OFF: 121.3 And the numbers with Gobert ON are trending in the wrong direction. The optics and the surrounding body language of teammates after Gobert mistakes is reminding me of his first season in Minnesota.

Rudy Gobert throwing shade at Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle when asked what the Wolves are missing 😭😭 "I think just passing the ball… I’ll be straight up, we need someone that is looking to pass the ball to his teammates.”

Asked Chris Finch about coaching a roster/starting lineup that has a clear in shooting from their guards to their bigs -- higher volume and higher accuracy from the guards, lower volume and lower accuracy from the bigs. Edwards: 40.6%, 10 attempts per 36 mins DiVincenzo: 39.2%, 9.4 attempts per 36 mins (Conley: 40.0%, 6.6 attempts per 36 mins) (Alexander-Walker: 39.5%, 6.5 attempts per 36 mins) --- Gobert: 0%, 0 attempts per 36 mins Randle: 31.6%, 5 attempts per 36 mins McDaniels: 32.8%, 4.4 attempts per 36 mins (Reid: 39.0%, 7.6 attempts per 36 mins) I bring this up with Gobert potentially set to return this evening -- and the possibility of the starting lineup again being: DiVincenzo-Edwards-McDaniels-Randle-Gobert

Rudy Gobert on his chemistry with Julius Randle "We both want to win. We both work our ass off every day to get to that. -- I was saying to Julius after the game, you got a lot of disrespect your whole career, and so do I. It's an opportunity for us to write our own narrative."

I think the most important variable to the Wolves' offseason puzzle is what Julius Randle or what Rudy Gobert could be traded for. That information feels like a pre-requisite to any meaningful deal. Because any big trade, including the Giannis one we go through below, all but requires that one of Randle or Gobert are involved in the trade, or moved in a subsequent trade. And I think a big complicating factor in the Wolves pursuit of Giannis specifically is that Giannis is likely the first domino of the offseason -- with everything else coming after that. Meaning: The trade market for Randle and Gobert should become a lot clearer *after* the Giannis decision is made. Is it possible to have that all mapped out? It's not impossible. The word I've been using going back to the trade deadline is complicated -- very complicated. I would guess the ultimate Giannis trade, if the Wolves were involved, would feel like two or three big deals wrapped up into one 4- or 5-team trade.

After Christian Braun dunked on Rudy Gobert with 5 minutes left in the game, Gobert was in the same position with 15 seconds left in the game and the Wolves up by 1. Gobert blocked the shot, grabbed the rebound, got fouled, hit both free throws, then picked up Nikola Jokic full court and funneled him to the corner to seal the game.

I think kind of lost in last night's game was the fact that Rudy Gobert had 8 assists. Gobert was great on the short roll the whole series, which was critical for him to be in this series, given how Denver likes to play Nikola Jokic up the floor, at the level of the screen. Asked Gobert about the assists, kinda jokingly, after he'd joked about Mike Conley having 6 rebounds. But he gave a great answer here, I thought, about his focus on offense being about creating advantages for his teammates -- through both passing and screening.

Is Wemby playing Gobert off the floor? 🤔 "They just look better with Naz Reid on the floor. They look physically tougher, and they look mentally tougher. They all look at Rudy like, come on man. That's our guy?" Skip Bayless

Chris Finch on the Warriors in Game 1: “They do a lot of fouling, holding, shoving, pushing and tackling Rudy [Gobert].” Finch said the Wolves have submitted clips to the league office to review the officiating and what was missed.

Julius Randle and Tre Johnson have known each other for years and love to talk trash, as I found out when interviewing Randle 1-on-1. He told me about an interaction they had during last Sunday's game... and then we found the clip. From Off the Bench:

The Wolves with Anthony Edwards ON the floor this season O-rating: 119.7 (same as No. 3 ranked NYK) D-rating: 116.0 (same as No. 18 ranked PHI) Net rating: +3.7 (same as No. 10 ranked DEN) Total possessions: 4287 The Wolves with Anthony Edwards OFF the floor this season O-rating: 114.1 (same as No. 22 ranked NOP) D-rating: 109.8 (same ad No. 2 ranked DET) Net rating: +4.3 (same as No. 7 ranked CLE) Total possessions: 2302 Asked Finch about this non-Ant version of the Wolves, and if this version will rely more on a defensive identity to drive winning in Edwards' absence. "I have seen the numbers. I do know that they're true. Ant's defensive impact has, at times, been up and down. I think we just have to rely more on a complete game, whether it be offensively or defensively."
