I participated in a psych experiment in university. They were studying behaviour associated with poker machines. I was put in a room alone with a simulated poker machine on a laptop. I was told I was the only volunteer on my campus but there was a screen showing a group from another campus that I was told was a live stream of others participating in the experiment. We were given $50 in credits to bet with and told that we could keep our winnings and stop playing at any time. For the first 5 minutes I won consistently but then started to lose consistently however, I could hear the win chime still coming from other players machines on screen. I started to theorise that the players on screen were actually a recording and that the win sound was being played to give the impression that if I kept playing my luck might change. After about 10 minutes I decided to cash out - based on my conviction that my hypothesis was probably correct. After cashing out the person overseeing the experiment asked why I had cashed out so early. I explained my reasoning and the examiner looked quite shocked. She then told me that of the 500 students who had participated I was the only person to cash out early and that my hypothesis was correct. The experiment was examining the influence of hearing the win sound from other players machines on participants desire to keep playing until they ran out of money. There was a $200 prize to encourage people to participate in the study - it was supposed to be a randomly drawn prize. A few weeks later I was sent a cheque and a letter saying I had won the random drawn prize. I’m pretty sure they decided to just give it to me because I was the only person to spot the actual purpose of the experiment.
