Many years ago after a Spurs shoot-a-round at the Alamodome, my photographer and I were walking across the empty dome, when Dikembe Mutombo walked up. He was going to the Hawks bus. He asked "how are you guys"? Fine thanks. I asked back "How are you Dikembe?" What followed was a 5 minute lesson in gratitude. "I am waaay more than fine. I have shoes on my feet. He was wearing basketball shoes and carrying another pair in his hand. "I have two pair of shoes right here, and many in my country have no shoes. They have to tie cardboard to their feet. I live in America and get paid a lot of money to play a game. It is a beautiful day, and I thank God for every one of them. I am doing way better than fine. Never go a day without thanking God for all of his blessings. God Bless you." We walked out of the loading dock and my photog and I just looked at each other amazed at the perspective that had just been dropped in our lap. I had more interactions with Dikembe and always came away inspired. He was one of a kind. Here's more of his amazing life story.
