It’s comes down to people thinking, subconsciously or not, that their accent is “default”. I’m from the Dakotas and people cope about our accent (Fargo movie accent). While the depictions in media are exaggerated they’re based in truth and a good number of people speak like that.

It can also be really difficult for someone to hear the way their pronunciations stray from the way the word is written and visualized in their head. Most English speakers (American included) never realize that we make a "b" sound instead of a "p" when we say "speech" or "sport"

@boris_kloris Correct me if I'm wrong, my understanding is that Australians have generally pronounced the "oh" vowel with a glide towards the front of the mouth like this guy, whereas the shift into an explicit "american" r-sound is a recent development more commonly heard among younger people

That's a female Melbourne accent, not standard Australian.

She had a very twangy millenial pitch and uses a lot of up speak. It’s the upspeak on the ends of words that morphs the sound into an American pronunciation not the general Australian accent.
