I’m so proud of my son who couldn’t decide after HS if he wanted to go to college, well yesterday he got sworn in to the pipe fitters union! Already starting off at $26 am hr for his first year and by the time he is done with his journeymen’s he will be making $40+ hr and going up!! With no loans to pay off! He wants to start his own business after!

The solution is easy, start immediate apprenticeship programs in middle school and by the time they graduate, they will be qualified to fill these positions

In Massachusetts the average age for HVAC Tech. Is 59 years. Im retiring in ten years. I have been in the trades 25 years I'm a high school drop out making 150k. The trades is where it's at!!!

We need Builders. I have 4 boys ages 13 to 22... I played this same interview for them. Oldest is taking welding classes second oldest just joined the Electricians Union my 3rd and 4th son are looking into taking a few classes for Building Trades in School.

@Missginger27446 Having been an HR director these jobs have been in demand for a long time. On the job training where employees could work and get the skills to get licensed was a solution because finding skilled employees was difficult. Love Mike Rowe. He is saying what needs to be said.

He is one of the good guys that’s for sure. Trade schools need to come back to the Public schools or make it an off campus curriculum that anyone can have access to. There is a business model there, but would take some searching for the right peeps. It’s a shame that even union training has hit the tubes. I know Union trained electricians that are not so bright. 😊 I learned on OJT started at 14 with my Dad. That has stuck with me for my whole life, every job of importance was because of that beginning. I tried college wasn’t for me. Advanced myself through different jobs even taking cuts in pay knowing the knowledge I would gain. Finally landed into industrial controls and automation have made a pretty good life for myself. I am an example of what he speaks to.

I own an appliance service company and we are in desperate need of techs. People that are competent, courteous, and conscientious. Without felonies, drug use, and aren't "scary looking" to be able to send into people's homes. Oh, and can speak English, read cursive, and do basic math. This is a stretch in know and these potential employees are almost impossible to find.

They need to bring back trades to high schools to get the kids interested in taking this route in their education. A liberal arts degree doesn't pay the bills.

So we train a shitload of kids in trades then 5 years later Elon’s robots are advanced enough to be your in-house electrician, plumber, HVAC tech, and will massage your back and make you a grilled cheese sandwich. Then guess who is out of work.

Pay attention parents. There is a good paying job at the end of their schooling. Employers are looking for these skilled workers.

Every 18-30 old I come in contact with I preach the same message as Mike have been for 10 years plus. The response I receive 50% of the time is my parents think I need a 4 year degree to make it. I have one year of college and have done just fine.
