I made an edit that I feel articulates my biggest problem with The Interstellar Song Contest more succinctly than words ever could.

as an aside, editing this made me realise just how much better the sound mixing was back in the moffat era

I think it’s so weird how the episode just doesn’t treat this as an impulsive fit of wrath but rather a very deliberate and thought through moment of the doctor doing something in a logically sound way. Even ncuti could’ve played this as irrational but he doesnt its rly odd

Watching this edit has made me appreciate the thorough line storyline from 9 to 12 where The Doctor learns to be themself again after the horrors of The Time War, with The Doctor Falls being the culmination of it

If anything it shows the difference in...Everything. One of the most iconic moments in the Moffat era and it's a day for night field with simple shot reverse shot. Yet it looks better than the infinite Disney money pool.

I respectfully disagree. The Doctor has always aspired to be kind and decent, and it's what motivates them most of the time, but the Doctor has ALWAYS had moments where they fail - acting cruelly or out of sheer vengeance. It's hypocritical in a way that's perfectly in-character.

And the thing is, s9 showed 12 could still have a fall from grace via hellbent. It’s possible for the doctor to spiral into doing some really bad stuff. However it must be earned. And 15’s random spouts of anger just do not fit the character. 1/2

I think they can make the Doctor evil...for a while. As long as he evolves. 12 wasn't just grumpy. He also told the Robot in Deep Breath that he'd go as far as needed to save Earth. He then either pushes it out or convinces it to commit suicide. By the end of s8 he's kind. (1/2)

I know right the doctor would never do anything like that

Sorry this doesn't show a problem, this makes the episode better and more clear what the intent is. This is The Doctor going to far. You're meant to feel wrong but it's in character. The Doctor doesn't have rules because he never breaks them. He has rules because he needs them.
