I feel like this was somehow a portal directly into dimension X rather than the upside down based on the lighting and the fact it’s the only time the mind flayer directly tries to come through

yea correct, i like when the upside down is a really mysterious, i feel abyss was a rush concept they didn't uncover much and it's not creepy as upside down.

That's the whole problem with doing a show for so long. Eventually you have to solve the mystery. Of course whatever's behind the mystery is going to disappoint you because it's reality.

It was a mistake to have Vecna be the big bad, he should have been the first flayed/victim of the Mind Flayer like in the play.

Well they had to reveal shit to progress the story. The mystery was good for the early seasons but it makes sense why they made it appear more often for later seasons.

Times when stranger things happen

Season 1: 'What IS the Upside Down?? 😰' Season 4: 'Guys let's go back to the Upside Down real quick to grab something.' 💀

Back when the upside down was actually dangerous and required PPE 🤌 if felt like the show actually had stakes

I miss when the characters had to wear makeshift protection to go down there because there were spores

It literally turned into a meaningless playground fit for children of all ages.
